We connect and support our Hawke's Bay communities towards a shared, sustainable future
We're Sustainable HB.
Formerly known as the Environment Centre, Sustainable Hawke’s Bay has grown from a small eco-hub into a driving force for sustainability across our region.
While our roots are firmly planted in environmental advocacy and education, we’ve evolved into something much bigger. Today, we support households, communities, and businesses to take real, practical steps toward a circular economy, zero waste living, and kaitiakitanga in action.
Ko wai mātou
Who we are.
We’re a passionate team of change-makers, educators, volunteers, and everyday locals who believe that sustainability isn’t a niche idea - it’s a community responsibility.
At our core, we exist to empower people across Hawke’s Bay with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to live more sustainably and build a better future for generations to come.
A mātou mahi
What we do.
We run a wide range of programmes and initiatives designed to make sustainability accessible and achievable:
Zero waste education for schools, businesses and community groups
Circular economy support through specialist recycling, zero waste events, sharing initiatives and audits
Hands-on events like beach clean-ups, kai rescue, and conservation days
Advocacy and partnerships with councils, mana whenua, local businesses and other organisations
Support for households through sustainability workshops, gardening programmes and waste reduction advice
Whether it’s composting at home, regenerating biodiversity, or driving change at a system level, we’re here to help people take action that matters.
I te ngakau o ta tatou mahi
How we operate
For years, we were known simply as The Environment Centre – a small but mighty community space where locals could drop off batteries, attend workshops, and connect with like-minded people. But as the challenges facing our region have grown, so too has our ambition.
Sustainable Hawke’s Bay represents the next chapter in that journey. We’re still grounded in the same values – waste reduction, environmental protection, and community empowerment – but we’re now operating at a broader scale, with bigger goals and stronger partnerships. The name might have changed, but the heart remains the same.
