Every Bite x Sustainable HB: Turning Food Appreciation into Action

This May, Sustainable Hawke’s Bay proudly partnered with the national food waste initiative Every Bite to bring a fresh, community-powered approach to reducing household food waste across our region. The result? A month-long celebration of kai, creativity, and climate action — one delicious bite at a time.

What is Every Bite?

Every Bite is a four-week programme designed to help households become more food resourceful and reduce food waste across Aotearoa. Participants receive weekly newsletters packed with inspiration, three simple at-home actions to help reduce waste, and access to a private Facebook group for support, questions, and sharing progress.

Hawke’s Bay Highlights

In Hawke’s Bay, Sustainable HB hosted a series of engaging events featuring celebrated local chefs:

  • Francky Godinho of St George’s Restaurant in Havelock North, a two-time NZ Chef of the Year who grows 90% of the restaurant’s produce himself.

  • Riccardo Francescon of Casa Ahuriri in Napier, known for traditional Italian recipes using local ingredients.

These events included live cooking demonstrations, shared kai, and discussions on food sustainability, providing attendees with practical tips on reducing food waste and making the most of every ingredient.

Why It Matters

In Aotearoa, households throw away over 157,000 tonnes of edible food every year — enough to feed everyone in Dunedin for almost three years. This waste costs the average Kiwi household $1,326 annually.

By participating in Every Bite, Hawke’s Bay residents learned simple, effective ways to reduce food waste at home, save money, and connect with like-minded individuals committed to making a positive impact.
