At Sustainable Hawke’s Bay, we believe real change happens when businesses roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. That’s why we’re proud to be partnering with local industry leaders like Tumu, who continue to walk the talk when it comes to environmental sustainability.
This partnership, now two years strong, is rooted in a shared goal: reducing waste, protecting our natural resources, and helping to regenerate the environment we all call home. As a major player in the timber processing space, Tumu recognises the importance of leading by example. It’s not about ticking boxes or chasing green labels – it’s about embedding sustainability into the day-to-day culture of their team and the communities they serve.
Soon, that commitment will take root – quite literally – with a volunteer planting day alongside our team. Tumu staff will swap timber for trowels and spend the day at one of our local restoration sites, planting native trees and reconnecting with the whenua. These trees will go on to stabilise soil, restore biodiversity, and help rebuild ecosystems that have been degraded over time.
For Tumu, it’s another opportunity to give back in a way that’s hands-on and long-lasting. For us, it’s a powerful reminder of the impact that can be made when organisations step outside the boardroom and into the community. Add to this their new composting partnership in which Sustainable Hawke’s Bay is supporting Tumu to reduce food waste to landfill through an onsite compost hub and interactive workshops with staff.
But sustainability doesn’t stop at the treeline. Beyond planting days, we’re continuing to support Tumu’s journey toward greater waste reduction – identifying opportunities within their operations, encouraging smarter material use, and diverting waste from landfill wherever possible. Whether it’s timber offcuts, packaging materials, or site management systems, we’re working together to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance or quality.
This mahi has momentum. And we’re looking forward to building on it even further, because partnerships like this are proof that local businesses can lead the way.
Our region thrives when we all do our bit – and we reckon that’s something worth growing.
