Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from disaster — it’s about building communities that are connected, prepared, and able to thrive in the face of change. Whether it’s supporting food security, energy efficiency, or local research, Sustainable Hawke’s Bay is working with others to strengthen the foundations of a healthier, more resilient region.
From local seed sharing to food rescue and future-focused energy projects, we support practical, people-led solutions that make everyday life more secure and sustainable. We don’t believe in doom and gloom — we believe in collaboration, action, and the power of local solutions.
Community resilience doesn’t come from a top-down model. We work alongside communities, local leaders, and national partners to design solutions that meet real needs on the ground. We deliver with humility, flexibility, and a focus on lasting outcomes.
We’re working with partners to support energy-efficient housing across Hawke’s Bay, focusing on insulation, heating, and practical upgrades that reduce energy use and improve living conditions.
By providing free in-home assessments, connecting whānau with support, and offering interventions that make a real difference we’re lifting home quality, lowering energy bills, and building long-term resilience — one household at a time.
The Kai Ika Project has arrived in Hawke’s Bay, and we’re proud to be partnering with them to turn perfectly good kai that would have gone to waste into meals for our community.
By rescuing fish heads, frames, and offcuts, we’re helping to reduce food waste, honour the full value of each fish, and support local whānau with healthy, nutritious kai. It’s a simple idea with a big impact — and we’re excited to be part of it.
The Sustainable Hawke’s Bay Seed Bank is a community-led initiative helping local whānau grow their own kai and build food resilience across the region.
By collecting, sharing, and distributing locally grown seeds, the Seed Bank supports backyard growers and first-time gardeners alike, making it easier to start or expand a home garden with varieties that thrive in our climate.
At Sustainable Hawke’s Bay, we see seed sharing as a powerful way to reconnect people with the whenua, strengthen community food systems, and keep local knowledge alive — one seed at a time.
